Explorer 1 was the United States first satellite. It was launched in 1958 and stayed in orbit for 111 days and discovered the Van Allen radiation belts that surround the planet.

Vanguard 1 was also launched in 1958 and was the first satellite to be powered by solar panels. It remained operational, exploring the environment around the Earth until 1964. But it remains in orbit to today.
