Designed in the 1960s to launch unmanned Zond spacecraft toward the moon for circumlunar flights for the Soviet moon program the Proton became another workhorse for the Soviet, now Russian space program.

Since the end of the race to the moon, the Proton has been kept in service to launch segments for the long line of Soviet space stations and interplanteary probes, including this configuration which was used for launching Zvezda to the International Space Station. An odd note to this model is the inclusion of a “Pizza Hut” logo decal which was placed as advertising on the launch vehicle.
