Designed in the 1960s to launch unmanned Zond spacecraft toward the moon for circumlunar flights for the Soviet moon program the Proton became another workhorse for the Soviet, now Russian space.

Since the end of the race to the moon, the Proton has been kept in service to launch segments for the long line of Soviet space stations including the main Russian segments for the International Space Station. This kit depicts the vehicle with the Zarya segment fairing.
