Launched in 1990 Magellan was the first was the first interplanetary payload launched by the shuttle. Magellan spent nearly five years on orbit at Venus using sophisticated radar imaging technology to "photograph" the entire surface of the hot and cloudy planet. At the end of the spacecraft's mission life it was used to measure the properties of the upper atmosphere of Venus as it was commanded by mission controllers to plunge into the clouds of our sister planet.
